FLOW / FLUJO

In March of 2024, I flew down to Guadalajara, Mexico to partake in the JupiterFab Artist Residency. It was an amazing experience, and came at a crucial time for me as I was figuring out my identity as an artist. I had never painted a piece this large before, and it came as a crucial addition to my portfolio.

My dream ever since I first began taking art more seriously has been to paint murals. There is something about the process that is so pure, and so unlike any other form of visual art. I have known for a while now that I am capable of pulling these types of projects off, but it can be very difficult to approach potential clients with “trust me, I can do this”.

Without any visual proof, it can be daunting to take an artist at their word. Thankfully, this residency offered me the opportunity to paint whatever I wanted, so, I chose to further develop my connection between visual art and poetry.

The piece began as a poem, and eventually took shape visually as a result:

imagine for a moment,

that you’re older than you think

born long before the stars,

or the water that you drink

the fact that you’re here breathing,

by chance or by design

should send shudders up your back,

it sent shivers down my spine

when the restless mind falls quiet,

a question may appear

why limit who you are,

to what’s seen in the mirror?

when in fact you are much deeper,

far stranger, more complex

a unique collage of happening,

between what was and what is next
